"Distance
Education in Pacific Islands," Vancouver, Canada (November, 1995)
-- Ms. Lori Mukaida participated in a meeting to discuss the preparation
of a book on distance learning in the Pacific Islands region. The meeting
was attended by individuals that have had experience in working in the
region. The meetings were sponsored by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation of
Japan and held at the Commonwealth of Learning.
“The New Tools of Learning: Cyberspace and Telecommunication
Systems, Mastering Technology and Maximizing on Human Resources at the
University” (September, 1995). Presented by Christina Higa
at Telecommunication Summit: The International Student Seminar on Human
Resources, Bandung, Indonesia.
"11th World Telecommunications Forum: Conference on Multimedia
Applications in Developing Countries," United Nations University, Shibuya,
Japan (1995/1996 Oct 95) -- Ms. Lori Mukaida presented a paper
that drew attention to the issues limited bandwidth, technological support,
and other factors that affect the use of multimedia in the Pacific Islands
and developing regions. Discussion of strategies for multimedia in narrowband
or high cost telecommunications environments. The travel was supported
by the Japan Society for Telecommunications and Information Studies
"Asia
Pacific Telecommunity (APT) High-Level Meeting on the Asia-Pacific Information
Infrastructure," MPT Ikuura Annex, Toranomon, Japan (XXX, 1995)
-- Dr. Okamura participated and gave a presentation on PEACESAT activities
in the Pacific Islands region to member countries of APT. The travel was
supported by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, Japan.
TECHEXPO Conference for Government and Education, Los Angeles,
California - Travel and Lodging (N. Okamura) (September,
1995) -- Dr. Norman Okamura gave a presentation on "best practices
and pitfalls" leading to development of State of Hawaii telecommunications
infrastructure. The travel was supported in part by the LA TECHEXPO.
"Disaster
Communications Task Force Meeting," Virginia, USA --
Dr. Norman Okamura and Ms. Lori Mukaida participated in forum
with American Red Cross
disaster and communication managers, Department of State (Mr. Bill Jahn),
National Telecommunications and Information Administration (Mr.
Bill Cooperman),
and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Mr. Robert McCoy)
on role of PEACESAT in emergency communications. During the meeting,
a
"Statement of Understanding" was signed between the American Red Cross
(Elizabeth Dole) and PEACESAT (Lori Mukaida). The funding for the travel
was provided by the American Red Cross, National Organization.
"International
Telecommunications Summit and International Student Summit" - (September,
1995) -- Mr. Ryota Ono and Ms. Christina Higa represented the
University of Hawaii and PEACESAT at the International Telecommunications
Summit and the International Student Summit in Bandung, Indonesia. The
air fare and lodging was supported by the Bandung Institute for Technology,
Indonesia.
"Hawaii
Information Network and Technology Symposium," (March, 1994) HINTS-6,
Honolulu USA/PEACESAT Services
"Emergency Management Network Site Planning Survey" (1994) --
Mr. Ed Tomasu of PEACESAT and Mr. David Kennard briefed emergency management
agencies in the Pacific Islands region on the EMN and conducted preliminary
site and environmental assessments. The travel was supported by the Pacific
Basin Development Council.
"Conference
of Ministry, Users and Providers," Forum Secretariat, Suva, Fiji (March
95) -- Dr. Okamura gave a presentation on PEACESAT program and
discussion of international issues affecting the provision of public services.
The travel was supported by the Forum Secretariat of the South Pacific
Forum.
"Briefing
of Guam, Pohnpei, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands
on the PEACESAT Services Improvement Plan" (1993/1994) Discussion
of the new digital network in the Pacific Islands region.

"ETS-V PARTNERS Satellite Workshop Conference," National
Institute for Multimedia Education, Chiba, Japan (1992/1993) --Dr. Norman
Okamura participated in a conference with representatives from the Bandung
Institute for Technology (Indonesia), King Mongkut Institute for Technology
(Thailand), University of the South Pacific (Fiji), University of Technology
at Lae (Indonesia), and the University of the South Pacific. The travel
was sponsored by the National Institute for Multimedia Education, Ministry
of Education, Japan.
DESCRIPTION: PARTNERS/ PEACESAT Conference, University
of Electro-Communications (Tokyo) and Tohoku University (Sendai), Japan
(1992/1993) -- Dr. Donald Topping, Ms. Lori Mukaida, Dr. Norman Okamura,
and Ms. Christina Higa gave presentations on the PEACESAT Network at a
conference involving U.S. and Japan telecommunications specialists. The
funding for the travel was provided by the University of Electro-Communications,
Japan.
"Sendai
Japan/ETS-V/ PEACESAT Experiments" (February, 1992) Presented
by Christina Higa at PEACESAT Policy Conference.
"Travel to Japan PARTNERS Meeting in Tokyo" (August, 1991)
Mr. Lori Mukaida participate in the formative meeting PARTNERS Project
to discuss the satellite workshops. The travel was supported by the Japan-Ministry
of Posts of Telecommunications.
"Conference
on PEACESAT Policies and International Space Year Cooperation." (1992)
-- Mr. Lori Mukaida co-hosted a conference to discuss the future of PEACESAT,
public service telecommunications in the Pacific Islands region, and
international
cooperation. The Conference was attended by over 80 representatives from
the Pacific islands; 8 University of Hawaii researchers, faculty and
administrators;
and over 50 scholars, researchers and telecommunications specialist from
Japan. Funding for the conference and travel for Pacific Islanders was
provided by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (Japan), Ministry of Posts
and Telecommunications (Japan), and the National Telecommunications
and Information
Administration (NTIA).
